Abby Slater began dance performance in 1985 and choreography in 1998. She graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a degree in Media Communications and a minor in dance and dance production. Abby was a member of the University Dance Company, coordinator and head teacher of the Community Dance Program and taught adult ballroom and children's dance classes in all styles. She is a former member of Pennsylvania Dance Vision's Repertory Ensemble.
In addition to her passion to choreograph, Abby began practicing and fell in love with yoga in 2003. She received her 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training certificate in 2010 and recently received her 500-hr certification from the Always-At-Aum Yoga School in New York and is registered with Yoga Alliance (YA).
Abby is the Founder & Artistic Director of Symmetry Dance Company and was a guest choreographer for the East Stroudsburg University Dance Company for over 15 years. She has choreographed and directed the Arts Alive Program at the Newton Ransom Elementary school in addition to various school programs in the region. Abby holds additional certifications with Yoga Ed™., allowing her to bring yoga into public schools and train classroom teachers to bring yoga tools into the classroom. She is a certified PILOXING Instructor and is also certified with Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and is a Basic Level 1 Zumba instructor. In Basic level 1 the four basic rhythms are (merengue, salsa, cumbia, reggaeton). In addition to other classes taught by her instructors, Abby teaches Yoga, Cardio Kickboxing and Dance at Symmetry.
Blythe Alexander began her dance career at age 5 at Northeast Theatre Dance Academy under the direction of Lisa Becker Padula, studying ballet, tap and jazz techniques. She has also studied under Kathi Jo Hubner at NTDA and Alexi Ramov and Jimmy Sutton at Tiffany Falls Performing Arts Center.
Blythe joined Symmetry Dance Company in 2013 and joined the staff as an instructor in 2014. She partnered with Abby in 2017 and become the Director of the Children’s program. She is the oldest of six children and has an intense love of dance, so it was the perfect fit. She mainly teaches tap and jazz technique at Symmetry, along with the Creative Movement class. Tap has always been her favorite type of dance.
Blythe attended The University of Scranton for both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biochemistry, along with an MBA in Marketing and Operations Management. Besides teaching dance, she works as a Quality Engineer and Manager of Product Compliance.
Janel Naro is both a choreographer and instructor for Symmetry Dance Company’s Apprentice, Junior, and Senior Companies in Contemporary, Jazz, and Hip Hop. She has been with the company since fall of 2014.
Janel graduated from Wilkes University in December 2014 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Dance. She began her dance career while in college, studying Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Fosse, Tap, and Composition under the direction of Kristen Deanna-Boonin, Broadway’s Lynne Mariani, Sean Harris, and Kris Cross. She had the honor of being teacher’s assistant under Lynne in Modern Dance.
While in college, Janel performed in numerous productions for Wilkes University’s Theatre, Dance, and Music Departments. She studied acting, voice, theatre history, stage make up, special effects make up, design, painting, lighting, sound, and carpentry. Before college, Janel studied acting at the former The Northeast Theatre’s Griffin Theatre Conservatory in Scranton under Mary Ethel Schmidt. Just last year Janel was invited to choreograph a piece for East Stroudsburg’s Dance Concert.
Ashley is a choreographer and instructor for Symmetry Dance Company. She has been dancing since the age of 3. She studied dance at Ballet Theater of Scranton where she was a featured dancer in Ballet Theater of Scrantons Senior Dance Company, Evolutions Modern Dance Company, and several Nutcracker performances. In 2011 she choreographed for Valley View High School's production of Phantom of the Opera. Ashley graduated from SUNY College at Brockport with her Bachlors of Fine Art degree in dance. There, she performed and choreographed for several of Brockport Student Dance Organziations performances. She was a member of the Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble and was assistant choreographer and dancer for the Rochester Rhinettes Dance Team. Ashley has been a NASM certified personal trainer since 2016. In her spare time she takes master classes at Broadway Dance Center in NYC. Ashley joined Symmetry Dance Company this past year and currently teaches hip-hop.
Carlie Craven began her dance training in ballet, tap, and jazz at age 6 at Cristina Sohns-Williams Studio of Dance under the artistic direction of Jennifer and Cristina Sohns. She later continued her training in tap and jazz under artistic director Gina Aldrich at the Moosic Youth Center School of Dance. While in college at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Carlie was reintroduced to ballet and furthered her study of it with Carine Puckett at Firethorn Dance Academy. Carlie joined Symmetry Dance Company in 2014 and joined the staff as a ballet/contemporary instructor this past year, working with the studio's Junior Company. During the day, Carlie works as a physician assistant in Internal Medicine at Physician's Health Alliance in Scranton
April Goldberg has been dancing since age three, primarily under the direction of Alexi Ramov and James Sutton. She has studied with the School of American Ballet, the official school for the New York City Ballet. As a member of Ballet Theater of Scranton, Civic Ballet Company, Scranton Ballet Guild, and Ballet Guild of Lehigh Valley, April was featured as soloist in many lead roles. Ms. Goldberg has performed with and trained under members of Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, San Juan Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, the Rockettes, and Martha Graham School of Modern Dance. Skilled in many varieties of dance including ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern, flamenco, ballroom, and aerobics, April has been an instructor/choreographer for many local dance companies, schools, and competitions. Such schools include Vince Brust School of Dance, Northeast Theatre Dance Academy, Turi School of Dance, Civic Dance Center, and Dave Ragnacci School of Dance. Ms. Goldberg has also taught dance for Marywood College for Kids, University of Scranton, Scranton State School for the Deaf, Keystone City Residence, and Tiffany Falls Performing Arts Workshop. April is pleased to now be part of Symmetry!
